Is it time to go to FCX?
I have several projects to finish first and I have a big project starting in early Jan.
Will that be enought time to learn FCX in my spare time? The project in Jan will be small, simple videos but they will have to be done fast. I know I can do them in FCE in a timely matter. Or should I wait until I have a little more time to learn.
Since FCE is no longer available from Apple, you might want to consider FCP-X or look for a used copy of FCE on sites like ebay. How long it would take you to learn either app depends entirely on your personal aptitude. Some people have mastered it in a few days or weeks while other have spent years trying to learn it and still have no clue what they're doing.

That's the future with Apple.
Double check your Mac as not all (even Intel Chip) Macs are going to meet specs.
Most after 2009 should be Ok but do the research before you buy.

I guess I should have said "should I upgrade" I have been using FCE for 3+ years and am pretty comfortable and good with it. I am thinking that I will have to go to FCX sooner or later. The question is, Sooner or later.
