Can't unmute my iMac

All of a sudden two days ago I have no sound. The volume on my keyboard says that it's not available. I have tried trashing the sound preferance file but that didn't work. I have seen a number of people having the same problem and I'd like to hear some other ideas on how to fix this. Please?!

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)
