Siri auto-capitalizes in iOS 6 - annoying!

Since updating to iOS 6, I've noticed Siri/voice dictation now capitalizes the first word every time you tap the microphone button, even if that word is in the middle of a sentence currently being composed.

For example, if you touch the microphone button and say "the rain in Spain falls" and then touch it to stop and then touch it again to continue and say "mainly on the plain" you'll get:

The rain in Spain falls Mainly on the plain

I often dictate with Siri and then go back and re-dictate the odd word it gets wrong by highlighting the word and tapping the mic icon to dictate it again. But since the iOS 6 update Siri now capitalizes the first word every time you start a dictation, any word I try to edit by voice gets capitalized even when it's in the middle of a sentece. It's annoying as heck and makes voice dictation mostly pointless now, since I have to hand-edit any typos.

Anybody know how to fix this?

Its 2017 and I'm running Sierra 10.12.5. The problem of Siri capitalizing words in dictation where it shouldn't is still with us. I followed the advice of contributors and disabled "Capitalization" under "Keyboard" but that seems to have had no effect. If you stop briefly while dictating and start back, your first word is capitalized whether or not you touched the spacebar. Otherwise I've found that Siri's dictation works pretty well, though I would like the ability to train words as in Dragon. Does anyone know of a fix for the capitalization problem?

I am a genius. I figured out how to do it but it is very annoying. Do not push done after dictation but wait until it hears nothing and stops by itself. Then the capitalizations that it made in the middle of a sentence will switch to lowercase. I would finish your entire paragraph so that you don’t have to wait such a long time multiple times. It’s a very annoying fix because of the time waiting but it works!

This actually didn't fix the problem when I tried it - when I highlight a single word in the middle of a sentence and re-dictate it, the software still capitalizes it. And it adds a new problem of making the first word of every new sentence lowercase when you're typing. But I did notice something... if you're doing stop and start dictating, it won't capitalize the first word when you continue as long as you don't press space (the dictation adds the space automatically when you stop and start.) So I guess that's something.

I just want Apple to switch it back the way it was so that you can highlight and voice-edit a single word and not have it default to caps. It's a pointless "feature" that should never have been changed.

It fixed the problem perfectly. If you're dictating and stop in mid sentence, then start dictating again it isn't capitalizing like it was before. I guess I'm not exactly sure what you're saying, but it worked perfectly for me.You're right, don't press the spacebar and it will remain lower case. When I start a new sentence it capitalizes it, and when I take a break and then go back to complete the sentence it is not capitalizing it just like it used to. I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "highlighting" the word.

I also find this incredibly annoying. Not tapping the space bar works sometimes but not always. And this is only true in some apps. For instance I'm using the iWork Pages app on my iphone and in this situation it capitalizes everytme the mic button is used regardless of whether space bar is pressed or not.

C'mon apple find a fix!

This never happened once on my 4S with iOS 5, however, it showed up in the betas of iOS 6 and was still in the GM (iPhone 4S), however, it's still in iOS 6.0.1 for iPhone 5. It drives me fing insaine... I'm, quite possibly, the biggest Apple fanboy in the entire state of Idaho, but nothing annoys me more than this obvious bug in iOS 6 which they didn't feel like fixing in 6.0.1. Maybe I'm just OCD.

And for the people who don't understand the bug, say I'm typing out a sentance, but I get to a word I'm not quite sure how to spell, or want to make sure I get the correct spelling of (due to word not being in the dictionary, spell checker, etc.), I'll tap the voice dictation button, speak the word, then finish typing the sentance, however, the word I spoke is Capitalized 100% of the time, no matter the placement in the overall sentance.
