I'm experiencing the same problem on Comcast. I eliminated my Netgear Router last night and ruled it out using only the cable modem provided by Comcast with WiFi built in. In addition to this my photo streams will not sync at home while on Comcast. This has been going on for about a week. My last iCloud backup was on 9/24/2012.

I'm getting very frustrated and don't know what other test to do to prove there is a problem on the Comcast network.

We need a list of host names the service connects to and the ports used to perform some testing....

Problem appears to be with the Arris modem. I had to call Comcast and ask them to put mine in bridge mode. I don't think this will work for you unless you have your own WiFi Router. If so, you can call support and they will send a signal to switch it to bridge mode.

iCloud is now backing up for all my devices and Photostream is syncing as expected.

I am having the same problem. I switched to comcast and my phone and ipad have not backed up since. I tried it on public wifi at work and it worked fine. I also called Comcast and got my Arris modem put into bridge mode and the wifi turned off, but still not able to back up. Any other thoughts on what is causing this?

Here's the deal guys...

Its the modem/router. More specifically, it is the Firmware for the Arris TG862 and the other TG86? Cable Modem. There is a known bug with the firmware that blocks your ability to use services like OPENDNS. As this problem pertains to port 53 and that Apple happens to use this same port for its services (or so I have read) it seems to me too much of a coincidence.

Anyhow, the fix, I went to my local Comcast office and got a new router. Fixed the issue straight away! I spent weeks troubleshooting this **** problem. Spent hours troubleshooting this with Tech Support, who incidently will treat you like your crazy for even hinting at the issue being their routers, GOD FORBID! I digress, anyhow... Get this replaced. Per Comcast online, they will replace this router free of charge as they have been working on a Firmware fix since July.

Hope this helps peeps! GOOD LUCK!!!!

@mpoweru Thank you VERY much for posting this. I had to have my comcast router replaced a few weeks ago, I didn't pay attention to the date. Then I received an error from my iPhone regarding iCloud backups. I've tried all kinds of workarounds and kept coming back to the problem having to be the router. The one that I had to take back was an SMC router and this one looks exactly the same as far as I can tell, so when I read your post I thought, naw, my rounter's SMC, but I'll go check just in case... TADAH! The new router is an Arris TG862! I'm going to the comcast shop to have them replace this tomorrow. Thanks again!

It absolutely is the router, but they will not replace it in the store if it is connected to your phone system. (A fact I only found out after I stood in line for an hour). Once the tech came out I had to convince him to actually change the router as he said everything was working fine. But when he did switch it everything worked right away. Another tip, if you say the phone isn't working they schedule the appointment the next day as opposed to a week later.

Hey guys I switch to comcast internet about two weeks ago and haven't had an iCloud backup on my network since. If I connect to someones wifi network iCloud works. I told Comcast and they switched my TG862 with another TG862. Is there any particular modem I should ask them to replace the TG862 one with?

Thanks

Ok, so now I am really confused. I have a comcast arris tg862 all in one. Purchase a apple airport express, had my arris tg862 put into bridge mode. I can connect to the internet and all using the wifi I set up via airport express but STILL cannot sync using I cloud. Did I do something wrong in setting up my airport express? I can connect ot internt but something is not right now. Please help.

Hi BmoreHunter.

As far as using the bridge mode method you'd need to see what CLJDOhas to say, as that user is the only one that I see in this thread who used this method. The method that worked for me is different. I went out and bought a new modem. This made the most sense to me since the firmware in the unit that comcast gave me had issues and I am paying to rent the thing, I figured that I'll save some money if I just buy my own.

I ended up purchasing a motorola SURFboard eXtreme (model SB6121) for $70 (happened to be on sale) from my local Target. For another $7 I was able to secure a 2yr warranty against failure, which was my only hesitation in buying vs renting.

This modem should work just fine for you since you are a comcast customer. If you decide to go with a different modem, the important thing is to make sure that you purchase a modem that is compatible with the technology that your ISP (in this case comcast) uses. Also DOCSIS 3.0 is the "flavor" of cable modem you want as it will give you better performace than DOCSIS 2.0 devices (such as an older Motorola SURFboard).

Once you buy the modem you will have to call comcast and have them add the modem to your account. They'll ask for the MAC address of the modem, then send a re-set signal to it, so make sure you are home when you call and can connect/disconnect the modem as needed. After your modem is added to your account and up and running you can then connect your new AirPort Express to the modem (via ethernet cable) and you should be all set!

I went to my local Comcast branch and switched out the modem for a NON-wifi model. Plugged it in, called Comcast to activate, connected Time Capsule.... Problem solved! Hope this saves others from wasting hours on the phone with Comcast and Apple like I did. (Although technicians were kind and helpful, neither company seemed aware of this problem!). I would avoid "deactivating" the wifi, because every time you have to do a modem reset it will turn back on....then you will have to find someone at Comcast to put it in bridge mode again.
