Option-G is create compound clip, which is definitely not what you want.

It's difficult to tell from your terminology, but it sounds as if you have a connect audio clip attached to a video clip. If you move the video clip the connected audio will move with it. Move the audio clip and attach it to something else. The audio and video are completely separate and can be moved independently, but a connected clip must be attached to something.

It really helps if you post screen shots as we can't see your computer.

There's no 'Unlink' audio (as such) in FCP X but if you select a clip in the timeline, and press Shift+Ctrl+S, the audio breaks away from the clip. Select this, and you can toggle it on and off by pressing V.

Take care with this, because it's easy to get the audio out of sync. You need to move the audio and video together if you have to move them, so I would select them both and press Option+G to make them into a Compound Clip (to preserve sync).

To mute the audio embedded in a clip, select the clip in the timeline and press Cmd+4 to open the Inspector.

Click the Audio Tab at the top of the Inspector and uncheck the Audio Waveform(s). Your Audio will be muted.

To mute audio for the entire project, go to the Roles tab in the Timeline Index (next to the film reel icon) and uncheck Audio or Dialogue (as appropriate).
