MBP lid closed wifi issues

Have just started using my MBP with an external monitor. Have noticed that if I close the lid on the MBP (so as not to distract from the monitor) I get very slow broadband speeds (through wifi), but leaving the lid open (so the display on the MBP is still "on" all is ok).

Is there a way around this?
