Is it flashing amber.. that is fine.. look in airport utility what is the problem.

If it is solid amber you are in trouble.. the hard disk has failed.. you should never store files on the TC.. it is a backup target for Time Machine not a NAS.

You will not lose any files resetting the TC.. files are only erased when you select erase in the airport utility.

how about if reset doesn't work?

if the HDD fail would i use it as a airport extreme?

because now my TC (1gen) is not discoverable

Which model do you have?? They have 500GB and 1TB.

If the led is not flashing.. you haven't yet told me if it is flashing or not.. the power supply could be dead or dying and unable to start the drive.. although it doesn't stop completely.

You need to check the power supply is still working.. at 4years now most will not be worth worry about unless you at least fix the supply.

Yes, you can use it as AEBS by disconnecting the hard disk power.

The instructions for disassembly are here.

oh forgot to mention, my TC is having amber light always on.

If i disassembly and put a new HDD inside, do i need to put a same size ?

and as ifixit guide if i would use it even as a airport extreme will be great,

because this stuff that year i think it cost US$500-600 X_X

thanks again and regards,

You need to understand as with all computer equipment.. what you paid for it in the past.. is not what it is worth today.. a new TC is better, more powerful and costs $300 for the 2TB model.. so your old Gen 1 which did cost a small fortune is now worth.. say $100 working properly and $20 for parts..

Fixing it is fine.. but calculate on hard headed numbers.. not emotional investment of large chunks of money in the past.. that is finished .. gone.. paid back already.

Drive is dead.

You can put in any current size drive.. although some 3TB do not spin down properly.. And for the $/GB 2TB are better value.

Remember when you do this the power supply will also need replacement.. very soon after if not immediately.. a lot of new drives run cooler but draw huge start current as they spin up faster.. the TC power supply will fail so be careful and think if it is better to buy a new one.

Just remove the hard disk.. it then will boot fine as AEBS.
