Q: Thunderbolt to HDMI

You just need a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. I bought this one from Monoprice. Carries video and audio (for the MBP that you have).

A Thunderbolt port can be attached to an HDMI TV via a Mini-DisplayPort to HDMI cable...Apple does not make that cable but does offer them for sale.  I bought one last Saturday at an Apple store, Kanex Mini-DP to HDMI 10 ft Cable, Part Number H4637ZM/A, $44.95.  I was uncertain about how this would work with the TV so I also bought the Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter-INT, Part Number MB572Z/B, $29.00 just in case.

The cables connect to the Thunderbolt/Mini-DisplayPort, and you then have to select System Preferences > Display and use Mirroring or not according to how you want to operate.  That should show up under Displays and the Arrangement button top center of that window.

There should be only one Mini-DisplayPort configuration since it is an Apple thing...same port as Thunderbolt, but third-parties may not be correctly identifying their cables.

Give the Apple store or on-line store a try...what they sell will fit.

And less than $7 for the adapter - you just have to furnish your own HDMI cable. And it works!

No, you can't go straight Thunderbolt to HDMI - rather than pay the expensive prices that Apple charges for third-party adapter, I bought this Thunderbolt>HDMI adapter from Monoprice - less than $7.

BUYER BEWARE! I just purchased a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable from Monoprice to use with my 2011 MBA 13 and a Toshiba 50" LCD.  It worked - sort of.  I got audio and video (make sure you change your speaker settings under Settings for HDMI audio), but I also had the playback cutting out frequently (I was playing an mp4 from iTunes).  I can only attribute this to either a faulty - or just poorly made - cable.  Mine was 15' and cost about $9.  I'm sending it back and going to try a quality adapter and separate quality HDMI cable.  I'm just saying.

I am not sure how much of a difference is from mini to thunderbolt perhaps small amounts of bandwith. It should be enough to drive a low resolution tv. The thunderbolt should be backwards compatible with mini.

If you like it please press like buton. If you don't like it ah well you have no option for that.

Ordered a new ShaggyMac for my rMBP and picked up a 6' Thunderbolt to HDMI cable. Worked without a hitch. Great quality on the Screen Protector and cable.

Amazon search can be obtuse sometimes. It tends to broaden out even when you searched for something deiberately narrow. I mistakenly ordered a regular DisplayPort instead of Mini DisplayPort Because it broadened my search to include stuff I did not want), had to cancel it and re-order.
