when their name pops up when you go to send a text message click the "i" in the circle next to their name and one of the options will be "delete from recents" once you click that it will stop from showing up

There is a LOT of misinformation here. I lost my 4S and bought a new 5S. I set phone up as a NEW phone. I did not have ANY backups of my contacts or my 4S at all. The contacts STILL show up in text. They are being pulled from somewhere else other than my phone. These contacts NEVER existed on this phone. Phone does have the same phone number so Apple is storing them remotely.

    New phone.

    New SIM.

    Never restored.

    Set up as new phone.

    Same phone number.

I have never even connected this phone to my computer or iTunes.

There are also numbers I have never sent texts to such as land lines.

Please see the post directly above yours for information on removing them.

How to permanently delete contact from SMS> when the deleted number shows up > click the (i) symbol then in red you will see {Remove From Recent} click on it and the deleted contact will be removed. I've done it myself several times & it work.

There is no bug , just go to the message where the contact is showing press on i on your right and delete from thread .

Was it confirmed the recents showup in messages.app being cached were coming off iCloud?

I have devices that were completly started over with recents.  Can someone please explain.

My little one sends PICS to random contacts that never existed on his device. It's funny when its going to one of the 5 contacts in his contacts.app not such when it goes elsewhere.

If It had to click the BLUE icon and remove the cached contacts from the device will they be resyncd.  This is going to take a while and I have 4 devices. I also have some GROUPS that will not go away even after clicking hte blue icon and remove. Has anyone seen this?

  • richardalan1975HUH Level 1 (0 points)

I made some progress but I am hung up on groups.  On the iPhone 5 and 5s clicking the blue icon of a group and remove works great. However on iPad 2, Air, and mini retina it does not :/  Anyone else not able to remove recent groups??

  • richardalan1975HUH Level 1 (0 points)

Im done, I loaded the box onto an iPhone 4s and successully removed the balance of the recents which included all the groups.  ODD only our 5,5s,and 4s can use the blue icon to remove the groups. The iPad 2's, Air, and mini retina can not.  The icon is there but when you click to delete the recent group it returns you to the TO field in the messages.app and even enters some text.  I filed an iOS problem / bug report.

This answers my query, I originally had all our devices using one account for apps and icloud but this 'recents' cache was an issue because my children could see my contacts.

Having removed account settings they still showed which can only be described as poor parental and device privacy on Apples part.

Although the 'recents' deletion is a workaround, this is not a fix and Apple needs to address it as a priority. There are many settings on the units that stop sharing content at the flick of a switch, such as photos. What is the point of restriction and unique accounts if this information is shared.

I've always been a strong adversary of Apple devices but after recent issues I've seriously questioned their privacy over functionality.

Is there an app that I can simply remove all 'recent' items which would save us the time and effort, if they are a contact we're not that bothered anyway.

NB - I'd like to know how the recents were 'shared' in the first place!

You type in the contact field in messages. Choose who you want to remove. Press the info button right beside there name. And then you press remove from recents. (It's in red)

When creating a new message a number comes up that you have deleted there will be an i in a circle at the side, press that and then press delete from recent. Then previously deleted number will no longer appear.

Unfortunatelly the issue with deleted contacts still occurs in 'Photos'. To see it you need to have a photo stream. Open 'Photos', then go to 'Shared' on the bottom, select one of your photo streams, go to 'People' on the bottom-right, select 'Invite people' and the suggested contacts list will show you all people you ever shared a photo stream with and even those which you deleted meanwhile and there is no possibility to delete/manage the list...

It really is an annoying issue. I know it seems as easy as pressing the "i" then removing from recents, but what happens when you don't know which number is which? I don't memorize people's numbers. I have to first figure out which entry is the correct one, then delete the incorrect entry for each contact. That's a bit much. Apple should really fix this.

There is no "i" when I do this... am I doing something wrong?

Here’s what happens. I hit the “Text” app; start to type the guy’s name (say John Smith), and immediately two John Smiths come up as options – the old, deleted one, and the new, correct one. There isn’t any blue circle, or “I” or anything beside either

    Thanks
