Never heard of that one in my years of using MS word on Mac or PC... Not to state the obvious but assuming you are clicking on one document only and this recently happened with any word file being opened triggering the all files/documents to be opened, it must be a virus of corruption somewhere in your Mac MS Office suite. To rule it out, I would check in Finder to ensure your "documents" folder is not all stuck on highlight. If not, then I would uninstall and reinstall MS Office for Mac.
Hope this helps....
John
Thanks John. As far as I can tell it's not stuck on highlight. It happens if I try to open an email attachment, open any document or try to open a new Word document - not at all annoying! Do you know how I can check for a virus?
I'm living in Rwanda at the moment and my MS Word disc is back in Canada, so reinstalling is a bit of a problem. Any other ideas are very welcome!
Thank you!
Kigali,
Interesting, it happens when you open any email attachement or just word file attachments? What email software are you using, Mail (with postage stamp as Icon?)?
There is no anti viral sofware that comes with Macs cos there is no overwhelming need for them. However, given the virus focus on PC, it doesnt mean they dont exist and your Mac maybe prone to a targeted attack to gain access to your system. I would reccomend you do the following to ensure your security is active on your Mac;
Apple Icon/System Preferences/Security & Privacy/General - then set up a password if you mac is unattended if not already done so. If you have and its active, you will see an active field with "A login password is set for this user" followed by a "change password" icon. You will see just below it an active tick beside a "Require Password X minutes after sleep or screen saver beings". If these fields are not active, ensure you activate them now.
Apple Icon/System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Firewall - turn it one by unclicking the lock at the end of the field (you will need your applications password for this) and when on, relocking the same lock icon. If not on, I reccomend you active it quickly.
Apple Icon/System Preferences/Security & Privacy/Firevault - if you have sensitive data files on your mac, then I recommend you set it up to encript the files. Remember though, if you forget your password, you will never get into your files again.
This has prevented any security issues with Macs in general terms. Its a simple security set up that is effective in Macs to date and I think you should ensure its active or activate it.
As for resinstalling MS Office for Mac, if you dont have your disc, I can only reccomend you get it resinstalled by purchasing again online via Apple or more practially getting the windows product key of your Windows PC for Mac disc box in Canada and seeing if you can use it to download directly from Apple (not sure if it will work, but if its a resinstallation there should be no issue IMO).
Hope this helps

You can't download Microsoft Office from Apple, strangely enough you can download it from Microsoft!
Try posting on the MS Word for Mac forum - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macword.
It's difficult to imagine what you describe... I take it to mean that each time you open Word, every Word document that is saved to your internal hard drive is opening? Try the MS forum - maybe someone there has had such an experience or a MS rep will jump in (they do from time to time).
I see that re-installing Office is not an option at this point. You could download the 2011 30-day trial version and try installing it (you don't say which version of Office you have).
Good luck,
Clinton
I'd try an experiment. Exit microsoft Word
In Terminal run /bin/csh
cd ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.microsoft.Word.savedState
mv windows.plist ~/Desktop
restart microsoft Word - if that fixes the problem you've got a corrupted state file
if that doesn't fix the problem simply move the saved window.plist file back where
it belongs
cp ~/Desktop/windows.plist ~/Library/Saved Application State/com.microsoft.Word.savedState
(you'll have to copy it back since the restart of Word created a new property file.)
no harm no foul--
Oh how silly of me!!.. I must have had Apple on my mind when I mean't Microsoft.... lol.. Thanks for the correction... 😉
Im kind a new here, but great to know when you can be unruly and blah blah blah out what some other member is saying so you can score some brownie points on a glaringly simple overight... Good to know.. 😎
Thank you Clinton, that was what I meant to say before Csound decided I needed a schoolboy correction... lol....😊

Just dealing with the factually incorrect part, for the sake of the questioner.
OK chap, fair enough... So let me be clear on this, I have no problem with any corrections to fact be it glaringly simple typos like I made or more complex inaccuracies, but what I have a problem with in this case is the disrespectful manner in which it was done. Theres an old saying where I come from which is "give respect, get respect".... Please do try and be more respectful in future, even when someone like makes an honest yet silly oversight.

The correction was not for your benefit, feel free to correct my errors.
...and I thanked you for the correction.. which I welcome.. What I dont welcome is clearly stated so I wont repeat myself... on that note, I think we understand each other... so we are done..
Have a good day sir..
Best Regards,
John

And you have a good day as well, say Hi to County Cork for me, I was born there but it has been a long long time.
Thank you for the instructions...but I can't figure it out. Where is Terminal? Are these instructions for a Mac?
I appreciate the help!
Terminal can be found in your Applications>Utilities folder. It's a command line interface to Mac OS X. The instructions provided by disguise are just a way to find and move a file from your Library folder. You won't hurt anything by trying out what is suggested.
Did you try posting on the MS Office forum? Any joy there?
Clinton
