Can I upgrade to Snow leopard now without my installation CD. I'm using 10.5.8 and eventually need to upgrade to Lion.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), I need to upgrade 10.6 snow leopard

You need a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD but not the computer's original disks.
