Problem with .dmg files

I have a MBpro retina and I am having problems downloading .dmg files. I bought the computer so i could use autocad and the like, but when i tried to download the file, it said the .dmg file could not be mounted. How can i fix this?

Just to be clear...you're not having problems downloading a disk image file - the download worked fine. You're having problems mounting what you think should be a mountable file system in the disk image. You can use the "Disk Utility" to gain information and even verify the format, etc. I would research the problem from the point-of-view that your disk image does not contain a recognizable UNIX file system. Where did this disk image come from?
