iPod A1136 model screen just has a scrolling bar; not recognized in iTunes.

I just recently rediscovered my old 60GB iPod model A1136, but when I charged it and then attempted to turn it on to use it, as soon as the apple logo is visible, a flashing bar scrolling quickly across the screen over and over again. It boots to the main screen, but I am unable to scroll or select anything. When plugged into my computer, my computer recognizes something is plugged in, but iTunes does not recognize the iPod. What's going on here?
