Optical Out 5.1 surround sound

im working on a exstensive video project for my job and it involves surround sound 5.1 i have a sonly Blueray player with optical in and i have it connected to my macbook pro(late 2008) via the optical out. but on my macbook pro running 10.8.2 it only allows me to to 2ch stareo out via the optical not all 5.1 surround sound i have tried going into the Audio Midi setup and it wont let me change the outppt from 2ch to 5.1ch is there a salution to this? or any other way to get all 5.1ch out of my mac and in to my surround sound?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4), (os 10.8)

Multichannel output options will appear automatically when connected to a multichannel input device. So make sure your Sony BD player supports multichannel inputs over Toslink. If it does not, the multichannel output option will not appear.


You should get something like this:

Notice the column on the left did not select "Built-in Audio" like yours - "HDMI" automatically appears when connected to an HDMI input, and disappears when disconnected.


The above is using the Mini DisplayPort output.


I have not attempted to use the MBP's optical output for multichannel audio, therefore I am not 100% certain you can use its optical output for that.
