It is a term that dates back to the dawn of computing, and simply means to restart your Mac.
> Restart...
Nothing gets erased.
Does it erase our Mac memory?
Only the contents of RAM (random access memory) which is held there only when it's powered up.
Not your storage memory which resides on your boot drive.
This is why it takes a bit to start your computer, it's loading the contents of storage memory into RA for the Central Processing Unit to use. 🙂
Reboot means to start the operating system in your Mac again.
The RAM in the computer is rewritten during a reboot.
The hard drive is not.
