Does iPod 3rd gen 8GB exist? And who at Apple could confirm this?

It is driving me crazy - Apple does not show a 3rdG 8GB model on the "identify ipod models" http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#ipodtouch and I was sure that was proof one doesn't exist.

I bought one from ebay, checked the serial on Apple site: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do?newid=y. It came up as a 2G so I can send it back but seller still believes it is a 3rdG 8GB

Then I called 1-800-APL-CARE and the rep sent me to apple repair where 3g 8gb models are listed. Funny how the repair prices are the same for 2nd and 3rd 8gb. I expect it is because so many people think they have one, it was easier to list it than confuse people.

I think they may have screwed up the press release: they wanted the low price of $199 up front, but confused the issue when they lumped the 8 GB with the new ones: "The new iPod touch is available immediately" There is no mention of model number or generation

I wonder who to ask at Apple to get a clear answer with real authority. Any suggestions?

It would still help to have an Apple authority confirm this. The rep who answered last night and used the repair list as proof there was one had a point. I believe they don't exist but would like someone from apple to say so.

I sent emails to some of the pr people but suspect this was awkward for them because of the way they launched 3rd gen, including 2g 8GB as the lowest price ever.
