Is my first generation iPad useless now? Do I dare to update any apps?

Of course you can keep using it, I still love my iPad, travels around the world with me and has never failed me. Maybe it cannot be upgraded to iOS 6, but if fully meets my needs. Technology moves on, and more and more features get added, but as long as my gen 1 iPad keeps working, I will keep using it. Gets email, Safari, a load of apps, just see no reason to replace it.

If you are concerned about a specific app being compatible, check the system requirements in the app,store prior to updating.

The first iPad is still a great device. I know

a few restaurants that use them instead of menus.

I have the first gen iPad running iOS 5.1.1. and it's becoming useless. Its crashing A LOT - even simple surfing on the web can cause crashes.

I've been restoring it all over but it never actually helps.

I'd so muhc want to downgrade to iOS 4 but thats impossible 😟

[Rant]Where on earth do you get your information and ideas from?

1. It's still supported

2. It still works - I have a 1st gen iPad for mail, web, books, office apps (many), note-taking, GPS and amny others. All I don't get are movie/music editing and the new Maps

3. Where do you get the idea that Apple should "do something" for 1st gen owners? And why now? Did you expect Apple to stop developing and evolving the device?

I'm utterly at a loss to understand this moral outrage any time Apple, or anyone else, brings out a new model or a new software version. Technology is synonymous with very rapid changes, and has been for 40 years. Hasn't anyone noticed how quickly phones, PCs, cars, TVs, cameras etc get replaced?[\Rant]

You are suggesting a hack and that is against the TOU of the forum.

Here's my moral outrage; the only solution to continuous crashing is to shut down and re-start. If I wanted to shut my ipad down every 5 minutes while using it I'd consult my psychiatrist. It is a waste of my time and renders the product a joke or at worst a real PIMA!

The solution to continuous crashing is:

1. Delet and reinstall the offending app(s); if that doesn't work

2. Restore; if that doesn't do it, then

3. Restore as a new device

My 1st gen iPad is *still* in use every day, and it doesn't crash.

Then, if you still have an issue, post a new thread instead of making your first post in one that's been dormant for 10 weeks; that way, you might get some help

yes, yes it is. I just got one and almost every app i try to download is only working with IOS 6. and without downloading ANY apps it was crashing and freezing all the time. so yeahhh major bummer getting this thing.

what apps are you using that still work on ipad 1? because almost everything i try to download says IOS 6 required! And i know its only a matter of time before the couple i found that did download will require the update.

I passed my old first gen iPAd off to my son who is still using it, and the dozens of apps he has loaded. Plenty of apps work on the first gen as long as it is updated to 5.1.1.

Ok so here it is step for step:

1. sign into your apple ID

2. make sure you have purchased through itunes the desired app, does not matter where I did it on my pc and phone.

3. go to itunes on your ipad gen 1.

4. go to your purchase history, bottom of the screen says purchased.

5. click down load, it will now ask if you want to download an older version.

If you go into itunes and just try and download something then sync it to the ipad it will not work.
