Time machine cannot complete backups - please help

I hope somebody can help me - my Time Machine has been unable to complete backups for about six weeks or so.

Having read some useful information on the support forums yesterday, I verified both my internal HD and my external disk. The external disk appears fine, yesterday my internal disc needed some 'minor repairs'. I booted from the Leopard disk, but could not find where to repair disk so simply verified disk again and it was apparently fine.

I have verified both disks today and they are again fine. However when I try to back up I get this message:

Can anybody help? Thankyou so much

Hello,

Seems likely a problem on the Internal drive...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

You could try excluding the ones with errors like this...

SrcErr:NO Copying /Users/macbookowner/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2012/30 Sep 2012/IMG_2772.MOV

But errors like this seem like the external drive is temporarily disconnecting...

Error: (-36) SrcErr:YES Copying /Users/macbookowner/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2012/30 Sep 2012/IMG_2772.MOV to (null)

What brand/model drive is it?

Oct 11, 2012 10:20 AM in response to BDAqua

Hello, and thanks for responding :-)

I have just run the verify disk (on my internal HD) in disk utility and this is what it says:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”

Performing live verification.

Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking Extents Overflow file.

Checking Catalog file.

Checking multi-linked files.

Checking Catalog hierarchy.

Checking Extended Attributes file.

Checking volume bitmap.

Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

S.M.A.R.T status says "verified"

I have had this problem for a while, and was trying to delete or exclude the error-ing files but it seems to find a different issue every time. I also have a problem in that with iPhoto '09 I no longer seem to have access to my originals/changed folders, it is just one huge iPhoto file?

I ran the backup this afternoon while I was out of the house, thinking maybe I was slightly moving my macbook or external drive while it was backing up - but despite me not being here it failed again :-(

The external drive is a II Freecom 500GB

Oct 11, 2012 11:50 AM in response to debzidoo1

I have just excluded this file:

Error: (-8088) SrcErr:NO Copying /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS3/Client/3.0.0/VersionCueUI.framework/Versions/Current

Then ran time machine back up again, this time it appears to have been successful but I'm not sure?? This is the message I receive:

Starting standard backup

Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb

Node requires deep traversal:/Users/macbookowner/Pictures/iPhoto Library reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonMissedReservation|

Post-back up thinning complete: 1 expired backups removed

Backup completed successfully.

Now I'm concerned it's deleted the latest backup that 'appeared' successful, and seems to have only backed up 3MB?!

Oct 11, 2012 12:26 PM in response to BDAqua

If I open time machine, there appears to be a backup named 2012-10-05-142333 - could that be why it deleted the other one as that I assume was an earlier backup from the same day?

2012-10-05-142333 appears to contain a good backup of /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe Version Cue CS3/Client/3.0.0/VersionCueUI.framework/Versions/Current

Do you think somehow this is resolved? Or would you suggest I get a new external hard drive to be on the safe side?

[All this because I am on OSX 10.5.8 - had my new iPhone5 for almost two weeks, cannot get iPhone5 to work without iTunes 10.7, cannot get iTunes 10.7 without upgrading to Snow Leopard - waited a week for disk to arrive from US to UK and now am too scared to download it without a good backup!!!]

A clone is an exact bootable copy of your Hard Drive.

Get carbon copy cloner to make an exact copy of your old HD to the New one...

Or SuperDuper...

Or the most expensive one & my favorite, Tri-Backup...

How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

Thanks for all your advice :-) I have ordered a new external drive as I tried to backup again this morning and it would not complete again.

Do you know how I can exclude the iPhoto Originals folder now I am on a newer version of iPhoto?

This is the message I get now, again left my macbook and external drive completely alone while the backup attempted

Hey

I received my new external hard drive and have tried to do a full time machine back up of the whole system.

However it STILL will not back up anything :-( I am getting seriously frustrated with this :-(

This is the message I get:

Copied 83 files (2.1 MB) from volume Macintosh HD.

Backup failed with error: 11

Perhaps I am doing something wrong? I assumed that a brand new hard drive would mean the whole system would back up from scratch? I have deleted /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist as per Pondini's advice to do a full rest of time machine.

Would really appreciate any help

Whew, in Finder do a Get info on the ScrErr files, what size/rights do they show? Do they exist?

I'd think of trying another backup app right now...

Try the free 30 day trial of this one, it has far better reporting of errors in it's logging system.

Thanks for responding again 😊

Yes they do exist, can't see anything which looks strange, 2.1MB and I have permission to read/write.

Every time I try to run a backup different files appear to have a problem. Do you have any idea what the issue is? My macbook runs fine, I've had no problems with it at all. And again verify disk says that my internal HD is fine.

I was trying to avoid spending any more money but looks like this is the only way!

One thing that's strange is that the message I got after running the backup was that only 2.1MB was successul, however I currently have 22.2GB of space used up on my new drive. Any ideas why? (It is taking an age to delete.....)

Am I correct in thinking time machine should be running a complete backup of my whole system onto the brand new drive?

Oct 14, 2012 6:20 PM in response to debzidoo1

The demo I mentioned is free & may give us better clues, & I think TM should be doing a new backup.

With the files being different that error, my 1st suspect is a RAM issue.

The Memory test can really only be trusted if it finds a problem, not if it doesn't find a problem. 😟
