IMAP - don't delete from server?

I want my email accounts to be set up as IMAP, yet I don't want emails that I delete on my iPhone to be deleted on the server. There is an advanced setting dealing with "Delete Emails from Server" when you have the account set up as POP, but not when you have the account set up as IMAP. Why? Is it possible to have an IMAP account that does NOT delete emails from teh server when you delete them from your phone?

Thanks

Sorry, but this is not true about IMAP. I have all of my emails set up on my Windows desktop at work as IMAP accounts, and there IS a setting to keep them from being removed from the server. My Android cell phone works the same way. The only one that insists on deleting the emails is the iPad version of Outlook. And it's a total pain in the rear end. I'm going to remove it immediately.

My wife and I have been android and windows users for years. She just switched to iphone running ios 10.3.3 As soon as I set up the imap accounts on her phone it deleted all old emails from our business server. To confirm, our android devices and Thunderbird on windows (set up as imap accounts) did not delete mails from servers because of the preference setting in their account settings that said "do not delete mail on server". The current mail handler I use (aquamail) has a setting to move to deleted first. It then syncs the deleted folder of my android device with the same folder on the server. If I delete mails from the deleted folder on my phone they are then deleted from the server deleted folder forever.

No.

The setting you referred to with a POP account is for removing messages from the server after being downloaded.

All server stored mailboxes with an IMAP account are kept symchronized with the server with each email client used to access the account. This is the nature and design/standards of an IMAP account which cannot be changed.

Thanks again - I must have misunderstood. So to confirm - both Gmail and Outlook can be set up as POP accounts? If my work email is set up as POP, and if I then log on to my work email via webmail online (as opposed to using Outlook on my laptop), will the email still be on webmail? I was under the impression that POP would pull the email from the server, making it inaccessible from webmail.

Outlook is an email client, and you can use Outlook to access a POP account.

A Gmail account can be accessed as a POP account with any email client.

There is an account setting for a POP account with an email client for removing messages from the sever after being downloaded. This needs to be set to never with each email client used to access the account.

With a POP account, only one email client at a time can communicate with the incoming mail server to check the account for new messages and to download new messages, and you can save sent messages on the server with a POP account so messages sent with the iPhone will not match messages sent with Outlook and vice-versa.

A Blackberry does not communicate direct with the incoming mail server for an email account as with the iPhone and all other smart phones period.

All email account access with a Blackberry is routed through RIM's dedicated email delivery service which provides some features not available when accessing an IMAP account with an email client that communicates direct with the server for an email account - not through some 3rd party delivery service located in Canada.
