Can I pair my ipad with my mac?

Can I pair my ipad with my mac? I tried to do this, but it doesn't seem to be working. I want to use Keynote Remote to run Keynote on my Mac. I am getting a message on Keynote Remote on the iPad saying, "Both devices (the iPad and the computer) must be connected to Wi-Fi networks or have Bluetooth turned on." I know how to run Keynote Remote via Wi-Fi, but I want to run through bluetooth for when there is no available Wi-Fi.

Thanks,
