I'm having trouble updating my iPad first Generation to ios6.....any tips? When I go to software update on my wi-fi network it says your software is up to date and it's running 5.0.1? Thank you.

The first generation iPad can not be upgraded beyond 5.1.1
The 1st Gen iPad is not supported for IOS 6
You should be able to update to iOS 5.1.1.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect to your computer & click on the "Update your device using iTunes".
Tip - You may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily. Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update.

Be happy: iOS6 is not an advantage in the iPad. The Apple map application in iOS6 is far inferior to he Google Maps app, which you can still get w/ iOS5, at least for the time being. The fact that Safari can't get all the functions of Google Maps, because it doesn't support Flash, adds insult to injury.

Correct, there is no model of iPad that can be upgraded to iOS 6.
iPad 1 updates to a max of iOS 5.1.1. The rest get iOS 8.4.
Those with iPad 2's should best refrain from doing such an update cause unless you are very keen in operating and maintaining the device, iOS 8.4 may prove to be a bit much for such older hardware.
Your iPad is to old to update to that software, I had the same problem with my second generation iPod touch.
I Have the ipad2 and when I tap in the settings software update it says on the right side "checking for update" for a long time , do you know how I can fix that ?
