since there is no official way to downgrade any version of iOS, I assume that, going to an Apple Store and ask them nicely whether they can help you in this special situation, is the only option.

Thank you. I guess I'll try this for the time being and will have to resign myself to buying a new Mac in the near future, even though I'd hoped to get another year out of my 2 trusty machines!

I just found the solution and I am now able to once again sync my iphone 4s (with iOS 6 upgrade) to itunes using my G5 PowerPC (pre-intel) machine!
There is a download of iTunes that allows this to work, version 10.6.3. More here:
