Why does my 27 inch LED cinema display freeze my Macbook Pro when connecting?

Hi,

I've had a 27 inch cinema display for about 2 years now and love it.

However, a good 50-70% of the time whenever I attach my MacBook Pro, currently 15 inch late 2011, rather than waking up the MBP, it just freezes the computer. The same thing used to happen with my 13 inch MBP.

Any ideas why that is?
