Timeline Shadow
Sometimes I see a a gray shadow on either side of the Timeline. What does that mean? How do you get it? How do you get rid of it?
Are you talking about gaps? Please post a screen shot...

Sounds as though you're working inside a compound clip, rather than a project.
Go back to the project this compound is in, and drag the end point out as far as it will go.
If it's not in a project, drop it onto a project timeline and drag the end out.
