The rental must be for $4.99 or less when using a rental credit. If it is more you will be charged. I just discovered this today. I had been issued a credit for a movie that had issues with playback. The movie I had rented was a new release for $5.49. I rented another movie with that same price thinking the movie credit would apply. I was charged for it so I contacted ITunes support and they informed me of the credit price restriction.

There is an upper credit limit for those in Canada of $5.99. I also was issued some movie credits and told by Apple Customer Support that I could rent a movie up to $5.99. Found out later that it didn't work and was charged my credit card. I also am in the US so if you live in the US, don't rent a movie over $4.99 if you want to use a credit.
