Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info(and then System Report if you are running 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion), then select Power from the left hand column of the System Profiler. Copy and paste the Battery Information from the top of the page back here.

Thanks for your reply. I am unable to turn on the computer AND it wont charge. The battery indicator shows one green light.

What does the Mag Safe connector show? Does it show a green light?
No, it has no light.
Then your problem isn't the battery but the Mag Safe power adapter. Check this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
Do you have a friend with a MacBook that you could check if your MacBook would work with their adapter? Or easy access to a computer repair place that could run a quick diagnostic?
You can get a new third party 85W power adapter on eBay for under $20.

You are very helpful. I could go to the apple store and get one. I have a 13 inch mac book pro. Probably much cheaper from e bay but would take longer. If I brought it to Apple they could chech the adapter. Hmmm
Yes they could check that it's the adapter and not the Power Port on the MacBook Pro.
