How to zoom out an image in Safari?

Prior to iOS6 when using Safari to view an image file (as opposed to a webpage containing an image), the default zoom was fully out to fit the entire image on screen, regardless of aspect ratio.

iOS6 seems to have changed this so that the default now is to zoom in to fill the screen. You can still zoom more in with a pinch or double tap.

Unfortunately there is no good way to zoom out to view the entire image. If you pinch outwards you must hold your fingers on the screen to keep the view otherwise it snaps back to a fullscreen zoom.

This behavior occurs in both regular mode and the new fullscreen mode introduced in iOS6.

This makes Safari unsuitable for viewing images with an aspect ratio much different from the screen.

Is there any way to get mobile Safari to hold the image zoomed out, or some setting I can change? Otherwise this seems like a major regression in usability of the image viewing feature.
