My Iphone 5 "other" storage keeps on expanding whenever I sync with my mac.
Why is this? It's currently at 1.64 GB, and from what I've read that's a lot.

Other is usually around 1 GB...

This is a fairly common issue with iOS in general.
If it keeps growing, restore the device from the most recent backup.
Also, if you have a lot of SMS/MMS messages, they will cause OTHER to grow.
