Do not install any maintenance application from the web. Period.
Install all system,applications and security updates released by Apple.

Keep your OS and software up to date (under the Apple menu at the upper left of the screen).
Make certain any software or drivers you may download explicitly state supported compatibiilty for the current OS X on your MacBook Pro.
Periodically empty the contents of the <your home directory>Library/Caches folder. Then empty the Trash.
Periodically Reset Safari from the Safari menu to empty browser cache and cookies.
