My Canoscan 5600F and Mountain Lion refuse to work together. Had no problem with Snow Leopard. Tried to download software for 10.8, without result.

Thanks, this helps me on my way, although it doesn't have the possibilities of the original software. I tried to download updates from American and Australian Canon Sites (the software for OSX 10.8. is not yet available here in Western Europe) but couldn't succeed.
To use Canon's MP Navigator application you must install the Canon CS5600F scanner driver. This is a different driver to that used by Image Capture, which is obtained via the Apple Software Update servers.
So from the Canon Australia CS5600F web page, ensure you have installed the version 2.06 of MP Navigator and the CS5600F v14.11 scanner driver.
Also, with regards to MP Navigator, you should trash the previous version you were using with 10.6.8 before installing the new version, assuming you upgraded this Mac to 10.8 from 10.6 with the previous version of MP Navigator still installed.
to delete an outdated version of MP Navigator do I just go to the ap folder and move the icon to the trash?
When I've tried to install the updated version I get "installation successful" but the new version never makes it into the ap folder.
I've got the same issue since upgrading to 10.8, with maybe some additional weirdness. I am able to scan using MP Navigator 2.0.6, but it freezes the animation that's supposed to appear when mousing over items in the dock. Also, when I try to drag and drop items in the Finder or try to drag items out of the dock, the item gets stuck to the cursor such that I can't actually drop what I'm dragging. And MP Navigator behaves somewhat differently: after scanning using the scanner driver, MP Navigator no longer automatically closes the scanner driver window. Instead, I have to manually close the window in order to save or edit the scans.
I'm unable to use Image Capture: when click "show details" (to adjust dpi, select positive transparency, etc.), I get "An error occurred during scanning." I've downloaded the most recent driver I could find (dated 8/4/12). I've also tried to use MP Navigator EX 3.0, but it doesn't support the 5600f.
Wasting lots of time trying to figure this one out. 😟
