ipod touch 5th gen vs iphone 5

Seeing as the cost is the same and the iphone 5 has more features obviously i should buy the iphone 5.

BUT i ask you this: do i need to pay for a monthly contract to use the iphone 5 as wifi only, like an ipod touch??

i assume the gps capability only works when connected to the network. correct?

Why? you may ask? well;

I need a new ipod. mine is 6 years old now and the battery is close to dead.

I want the ipod touch for exploring ios 6 as well. as an aspiring developer i would like to experience mobile web, and apps.

Like i said i am a student, aka somewhat poor. i have a cheap cellphone "dumb-phone" talk and text, all i need right now. i seldom use my cellphone anyway.

I live in the US but will be moving home to Australia in about a year. i can either sell the iphone here before i leave, or keep it as a "glorified" ipod touch.

But i see the iphone 5 has more features, camera, mic, A6 processer!

but i dont want unforeseen costs when i dont need, or can afford, the 4glte network, data plans, expensive voice and text. which is also not needed.

iPhone 5, iOS 6

I think your situation you would be better off with the iPod Touch. Buying a "contract free"/unlocked iPhone is way more expensive than an iPod touch.

The only major drawback in my opinion is the camera on the iPod Touch. The iPod doesn't have to run all the processes that the iPhone does for phone portion so it doesn't need as speedy of a processor. The iPod touch 5th gen is no slouch but doesn't need as much as an iPhone.

If you want to pay for a phone, a contract and a termination fee then get the iPhone. Also you could wait for the iPhone to come to prepaid carriers, however you'll have to buy the iPhone outright and that'll set you back at least 649 US dollars.

Up to you.

See when you buy an iPhone for the advertised price you're buying it at a subsidy. This means that carrier pays the rest of the price of it and over the course of the contract that make that money back. When you cancel the contract they charge you a termination fee. This fee starts can be very expensive. You should check with your desired carrier to find out more.

So if you bought a phone, got a contract and then got ready to move to Australia you'll have to cancel your plan and pay the termination fee. As you said you mostly want an iPod touch for your use cases, so get an iPod Touch, get the 64 GB model and enjoy it on wifi.

Currently I am abroad and using my iPhone 4S as an "iPod Touch" and it isn't as seamless as i'd like.

Good luck
