Unless you have an iPhone5 you can upgrade your iPhone to iOS6 and still use OSX 10.6.8 with iTunes 10.6.3. iTunes 10.7 is only required for an iPhone5 or brand new device.

Did you ever upgrade to 10.8? I also have a Macbook 5,1 and am now considering upgrading to 10.8. I know the specs says it can, but I was wondering how well it's been working for you. Thanks.
