Addressing text message has name/phone not in address book

I have a phone book entry where I needed to change the phone number. The person texted me and I did add to contacts, then add to existing contact. I then added the phone number to the contact with a phone number designation of other. I then deleted the old number and changed the new number to say it was an iphone number. Now, when I try to address this person by typing the first few letters of their name in the to: box, I get their old phone number. Their new contact is there with the new number, but I have to scroll down to find it. I can't get the old number to go away. I have even deleted their name from my contacts on the iPhone and iMac and added it back. Nothing works. Also, to rhe right of the name is a cloud like icon, the only one I have seen. Everything is syncing via iCloud and it is up to date. Any ideas?

Brad.
