Can't get camera connection kit to work!

My camera uses the mass storage data transfer method which should be compatible with apples camera connection kit, however I can't get it to transfer photos either via the USB or sd card reader connectors. It comes up with the message " cannot read the connected storage media"

Anyone got any ideas on why this would be? Thanks.
