I bought a new imac for my photography and I can't seem to be able to install my photoshop cs4 cd on it. I need it asap for my job, if anyone could help that would be wonderful! I am a first time Mac user and I'm a little lost !

CS4 was written for the PPC processor. Your new Mac has an Intel processor and starting with 10.7 and then 10.8 Mountain Lion, Rosetta, which ran PPC apps in a PPC emulation environment, has been dropped. This means it won't run CS4.
Depending on your model, it might be possible to install Snow Leopard to a separate partition and run CS4 there.
Other than that, you can try running Snow Leopard in the following manner.

EDIT: Just re-read. The issue may be if you're installing from a CD, the CS4 may be keyed to your previous Mac and the license won't allow it on another until you deauthorize the previous one.

Could you please be more specific about the error message you are receiving when you attempt to install Photoshop? The more details about your setup, the better: Go to About this Mac under the Apple Menu and tell us all of the information listed.
You say you are a "first time Mac user" but you already own Photoshop CS4: are you attempting to install a Windoze version CD into your new Mac? If so, are you running Windows on your new Mac (either through Bootcamp or virtualization, such as through Parallels or VMWare)? If not, a Windows version CD will NOT install on your Mac: you will have to acquire a new copy specifically for the Mac (or run it through Windows on your Mac).
