an unexpected error has occurred

I have Apple TV 2. Everything seems fine except I can not watch movies that I rent on iTunes. I keep getting the error a unexpected error has occurred. I have tried everything including setting it back to the factory defaults and applying the new software. Still no luck. What else can I do? Or is this an Apple issue?
