It,s asking for your software update . Beacuse many app downloading are depending in the App Store on your device software version . So you can check automatic software update or you can update by manually in itunes Store .
Have you tried the info in this link: How to update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch ?
Connect your iPad to iTune (computer) and Check for Updates. Backup before you proceed with update.

I have a iPad 1 and I think it doesn't have that because I can't find it
How can I do the backup because I tried connecting it to the computer and noting happens when I open iTunes
You need to connect your iPad to your computer like Diavonex said. I didn't read that you only had iOS version 4.2 on a iPad 1.
Click on the heading labeled: Update your device using iTunes, will give you instructions on what you need to do.
