Cursor turned into rotating kaleidascope - what to do?

I was transfering a book to my kindle via UBS when the cursor turned into a rotating kaleidascope, and I can't get into my MacBook.

Did it turn into a kalieidascope or is it the round spinning colorwheel? Have you tried to simply keep the power button down which would shutdown the system allowing you to boot back up?, or is it that everytime you try to bootup its the same issue? You may ultimately need to reinstall the system via the backup partition then do a Time Machine restore if you use Time Machine and if your system is pretty much modern.
