sound and volum

Hello fellow Mac'rs - I was watching a move on my Imac last night with all systems fine. I put the machine to sleep after i had finished and when i woke up this mornig i discovered i had lost sound. The volume control at the top of the screen is greyed out and the bar that appears on the screen when i adjust the volume using the keyboard shows a crossed out circle below it. Any ideas?
