AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.

Oct 14, 2012 11:41 AMby bispymusic,Kappy's post is correct. The reason is that Apple only supports it on devices built with a separate chip for encoding h.264 video. Back in 2010 that chip was not a part of the system.
If you really want to do AirPlay Mirroring from the iMac you should check out AirParrot. It's $10 and enables AirPlay "mirroring" on older hardware. Your performance may vary though given that the hardware wasn't originally designed with this in mind.
