I have been using Excel 2004 for many years and have created a large number of useful macros. I believe all of them are stored in the Personal Macro Workbook. I just installed Office 2011. When I open an Excel 2004 file in Excel 2011, it appears that the macros have been lost. Is there any way to move the macros created in Excel 2004 to Excel 2011?

Macros created in Excel 2004 do not work in Excel 2011. AFAIK Office 2011 has done away with macros due to the high security risks they had.
Yes, macros are gone., since I think 2008. You can do most such stuff through Applescript, though it can be cumbersome.
I thought (and have also read) that macros were definitely back in Office 2011. That was supposed to be one of the big improvements of Office 2011 over Office 2008.
No mention of macros in mine; it does offer automation with Visual Basic.
OK, it seems they are back - you learn something every day! Does it still have Applescript support?

Here is the solution, which I found through the Microsoft Office for Mac forum:
Just make sure you have read and write privileges to the Microsoft Office 2011 folder and all its contents.
