Q: time capsule set up

When purchasing the time capsule for backing up my files i was told i did not need to connect to my modem for this. I have tried to install the device but with no success - do i need to connect to a modem first?

Time Capsule has wireless  router + disc.  If your internet is coming from Cable then you have (need)  a cable modem.   The TC will plug into your Cable Modem.

Whoever told you this either may have figured out an unsupported method for backups, or they were mistaken.

Check the Setup Guide that came with your Time Capsule to verify that the Time Capsule needs to be connected to your modem or wireless router using an Ethernet cable to operate correctly on your network.
