That is only a feature of iOS 5 or later... If you have iOS 4... See Here...

Connect to iTunes on the computer you usually Sync with and “ Check for Updates “...

be careful it doesnt mess up your ipad forever.
I tried to update mine and its been unusable ever since and no one can help!
....are sure you really need to update?
