Mac App Store doesn't show OS X updates

Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion in July, the Mac App Store has stopped showing updates for OS X. It shows normal app updates like Evernote but it didn't notify me for the 10.8.1, the 10.8.2 and the recent Supplemental Update. This happens even after days that the updates are released. I discovered that there were updates available from news sites.

I contacted Apple Support but I was quite rudely shut up. The guy at the phone told me that "this is normal" and that Apple "is not obliged" to issue a notification for all the system updates. I told him that all my Mac-owners friends could download the updates from the App Store but he told me that "they were lying" to me. I was so aghast at his response that I didn't started laughing in his face as he probably deserved. I will find a way to get back to him via an official complaint to his superiors, that's for sure.

Can anyone help me with the Mac App Store issue, anyway? Currently I'm forced to download the updates manually from Apple's site.

Thanks in advance for the support!

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities

Go to System Preferences > Software Update and make sure that all the options are marked. Then, go to  > Software Update to search updates for your computer

So, what happens if you open App Store and click on the Updates icon? Of course, now that you have updated manually nothing may show up. However, when updates are available the App Store's Dock icon should be badged. When App Store is opened and updates are available you should see the Updates icon badged as well.

However, OS X no longer pops out a dialog informing you that updates are available now that all software updating services once provided by Software Update is being handled by App Store. If you open Software Update there are still some user options you can change.

It's possible you have a problem with your system. I've had this same issue with Lion. Eventually, I bit the bullet and did a scratch reinstallation which seemed to fix things. But there may have been less invasive solutions I just did not think of or find. So you might start with the following:

  1. Boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
  2. Download a utility such as Mountain Lion Cache Cleaner and use to clear out user, system, and font caches. Restart is immediately required.
  3. Reinstall OS X.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Hi!

I did the following and I was able to install OSX 10.8.2 from the App Store:

1 - Download and install this update "OS X Mountain Lion Update v10.8.1" from here http://support.apple.com/downloads#osxmountainlion

2 - Open App Store and go to "Updates" (OSX update 10.8.2 appeared)

3 - Upgrade OSX Mountain Lion to 10.8.2

4 - Optionally you can install the supplemental update: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1600

Cheers.

I was able to solve my issue!!! 😀

A techie friend of mine noted that when I tried to load some websites like rdio.com - or even icloud.com! - I would get a warning from my browser that the site wasn't safe. This led him to discover that somehow I had untrusted the COMODO Certification Authority that issued those certificates. I think that this happened when I read online that COMODO was implied in a security scandal that exposed a lot of big name websites like Gmail. But then I totally forgot about that.

Apparently, Apple uses COMODO certificates both for the iCloud's web interface and for the Mac App Store. In the Mac App Store you don't know which internet protocol is being used, wheter it is HTTP or HTTPS or even FTP, so you don't get not even one warning about the missing certificate. The Mac App Store simply says that you don't have any update to download. Yeah. Really.

To troubleshoot this issue I had to open the Keychain app, search for "comodo" in the search bar and reset the trust preferences for Comodo's certificates. I did a reboot after this to be sure the new rules were applied. It worked perfectly fine! I was able to download Safari 6.0.2, a Java update and some HP drivers update that just minutes ago I wasn't able to even see listed!

Thanks for the support!

This solved my problem too but I'm pretty sure that I have never explictly changed the trust on those certificates.

So thanks.

To Apple: The lack of useful error message from the AppStore app is appalling (this is not the first time I've had issues with the app that are invariably solved by touching some apparently unrelated part of the system). Nothing in the Console logs either.

I had a similar problem with my 10.8.3 installation.

'sudo softwareupdate -l' in Terminal will show available system updates but non shows up in the App Store app.

I upgraded using the Combo Updater to 10.8.4, with other system updates (e.g., Digital Camera Raw) still pending. I think the Combo Updater fixed something such that the pending updates show up in the App Store app now.

Note: It is important to invoke Software Update from an Admin Account. I am usually logged in to a normal user account, and when accessing Apple->Software Update from the normal user account, it will end up with "No Updates Available" despite said updates being listed if I use the command line software update tool.

After switching to the Admin account, the App Store app finally shows the pending updates. In addiiton, my Admin account does not have an iTunes account activated (it is only activated in my normal user account), if that makes any difference.

In previous versions of OS X (10.7 and below), invoking Software Update in a normal user account will prompt for the Admin account credentials before launching the program.
