I can't open my Mail application version 4.5
I downloaded the recommended Software Update sent to me from Apple on my MacAir
The following message flashes when I attempt to open my Mail
"You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OSX"
I tried the suggestions from Apple - still no Mail

Hmm, the current version of Mail is 6.2, so you're quite far behind the current one.
What version of OS X are you running?
I do not know the version of OS X - how do I find out, I suppose it is the most recent since I downloaded it yesterday..
may I should aquire the newest version of Mail?
You can learn the version number of your OS X by clicking on the Apple icon on your menu bar in the upper left, and then "About This Mac" just below it.
With the recent versions of OS X (current is 10.8.2). Mail is included and not separately downloaded.
the version on my MacAir is Mac OS X version 10.6.8
when reading the "Help" area of my error message it mentions to be sure the Mail app has the latest upgrades - do you know how I can check that?

My guess is that Mail was included with OS X version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard from 2010) also.

By the way, you don't have the latest OS X even though you downloaded yesterday because there are (small) fees involved to upgrade Snow Leopard to Lion (2011 operating system), and to upgrade Lion to Mountain Lion (current).
Snow Leopard came out in August of 2009 with the 10.6.8 update v1.1 being released almost 14 months ago (July 25, 2011). In the event that sberman's recommendation does not work (to run those updates) you may wish to consider an Archive & Install of the OS.
