iPhone 5 Charging Problem from Car and portable USB charger

My iPhone 5 charges perfectly fine when plugged into the mains on the wall or my computer via USB.

However, I cannot charge it when using a USB adaptor in the car and plugging the iPhone in via the lightning cable provided - it just won't charge at all.

Also, when I try to use my Duracell portable USB Charger which worked perfectly fine when I had my iPhone 4S, it doesn't charge either - even when using the lightning USB cable that came with my iPhone.

It must be something to do with the new lightning connection.

I am flying on Saturday and want to be able to use my porable chargers to charge my iPhone while I am travelling as it is a long journey and the chances are that my phone will run out of battery without it.

Any suggestions on what I should do?! And has anyone else had the same problem?

Try another USB socket to go in the car as you seem to have covered the obvious

and cable is clearly working

Sounds daft but try cable in both ways up ( in iPhone 5 )

Getting the portable charger working is most important for me... I will try another USB adaptor in the car anyway if possible.

I tried both ways up... do you think an adaptor would work with the portable charger?

it does with mine if you mean the 30 pin to lightning adapter ,if you can get hold of one

advise against anything not from Apple though

Are you using a Belkin ,Kensington or Griffin type old lighter socket plug with a USB port at top

The USB adaptor in the car is Griffin, and it's a twin charger with 2 USB sockets.

I want to try it with one of those adaptors - but can't get one anywhere! 😠

If it is an older Griffin dual, it may not be putting out enough power. Go to the store and look for one that is 2 amps or higher.

until i could get extra cables I ran my iPhone 5 in car using a twin Griffin USB output

cable plugged into either 1A or 2A and using old cable and the 30 pin adapter Perfect

I have a Duracell will try that later

Ps iPhone needs 1A it is only the iPad needs 2A which is why the USB plugs have 2 x output

1A ,2A

Thanks!! I would be ever so grateful if you could try plugging your iPhone 5 into the Duracell portable charger using the USB that came with the phone, then try it using the 30 pin cable and adaptor into the iPhone. Please let me know if that works 🙂 🙂

OK

Duracell PPS2 >>>

1. old cable attached to 30 pin adapter >>iPhone 5 >>>charge plug shows up in batterymeter + tweet

2. >>Lightning cable >>>iPhone 5 >>>charge plug shows up in batterymeter + tweet

ergo works A OK 100% perfect

ps iPhone was 100 % charged therefore only tweet and plug sign

Okay, I have got the same Duracell charger... so you are saying it works for you just plugging the lightning usb cable into the iPhone?

My phone doesn't react when I plug it in, what might the problem be? 😕

Yes it works totally

Have you tried a reset hold home / sleep until Apple logo appears ,like a PC reboot

if not try a restore

I have just done a reset, and IT WORKS!! I can't tell you how relieved and happy I am now, I have been running calling up Duracell, Apple numerous times with no result.

I can't thank you enough!!

Update: I have just tried it on my other Duracell charger which is 1800mAh (Model no. PPSOGCGBL) and it's not working on that still. However I am still very happy that it is now working on my PPS2 model.
