I'm guessing the headphones are working, but the microphone isn't?

The 3.5mm audio input jack socket on all Macs is expecting a STRONG LINE-LEVEL signal, whereas all(?) 3.5mm audio jacks from a headset microphone provide a WEAK MIC-LEVEL signal (intended for a Windows PC).

Your mic is working, it's just about 1000 times too weak for that socket on your Mac. No easy solution, I'm afraid. Either:

a) A "mic-to-line" level convertor pre-amp (not cheap and hard to find),

or

b) abandon that mic and get a USB one,

or

c) get a Griffin iMic (a mic-to-USB convertor). Often come up cheap when used, on eBay.

I just ruined a microphone thinking something was wrong with it trying to get it to work on my new Mac Mini. Then I did my research, granted a bit late and found out that the Line Input needs about 600 mV of signal to work properly which is a lot more than normal microphones put out. Apple lost it on the User Scenerio on this one, as how many people want to connnect a Line Input Level to that jack? 99% of consumers will connect a microphone like I did, NOT the output of a mixer panel or amplifier. The ONLY convenient solution for a microphone on a Mac Mini is a USB microphone.
