Q: Problem entering the serial number

I bougth Apperture 3 last year and recently upgraded my macpro to retina display. I did the full recovery from Time Machine and all my sofware worked well, except the Apperture. I enter the serial key and It works. But every time I quit the App and execute It again, It asks for the same serial number.

What I have to do?
Thanks for your help.

You may have a corrupted "ProAppSystemID" file or Aperture cannot write to the System Library.

To stop Aperture asking for the serial number, first check, if you still have an old file "ProAppSystemID" in your System Library.

    • Quit Aperture.
    • Go to your MacintoshHD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support", then "ProApps".
    • Remove the File "ProAppsSystemID" to the Desktop, if it exist and restart Aperture.
    • Reenter your serial number, hopefully for the last time.

Sometimes Aperture writes this file to a temporary directory, when it cannot write to the Library. If the above does not work, look at the temporary directory /tmp

    Use the Finder's "Go" menu

Go > Got to folder    and  enter /tmp into the textfield. If you see the file there, move it to its proper location.

In this case you may want to repair the permissions on your system drive; you can do this using the "First Aid" tools in "Disk Utility" (located in Applications > Utilities)

The problem is returning. Asked for serial again!!!

    What else It could be?

I am also facing a very slow performance on Aperture. I am very frustrating with It... expected more with Aperture in my new Retina Pro. Problably migrating all my photos and returning to iPhoto....

    Thank you again.

Try the Trouble Shooting Basics: Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics

Start with repairing your Aperture Library and removing the preferences.

What have you done, before the problem returned? Installed new software? Imported images or videos?

    Moved your Aperture Library?

    Imported iPhoto Libraries?

Hi leonieDF. The problem is coming back again. A imported new imagens, turn off and turn on my Mac and turned on and off Aperture several times - normally. But today the messagem appears again and I have to enter the serial again.

I did the Repair Permissions and also the Repair Database.

What do I have to do?

What kind of user accout are you using? Are you working from an admin accoount or a regular account?

If you are not using an administrator account, Aperture may be having permission problems with the system library, not your Aperture library: see Dave's post:

Aperture requests serial number after every reboot due to improper permissions on ProAppsSystemID

If you try the terminal command he posted, please check your typing very carefully, since the command uses "sudo"

Hi leonieDF. It still do not work.

The MV command returned the message: "No such file or directory".

I checked the /Application Support/ProApps and there is no file "ProAppsSystemID"

I checked mannualy the Library/Application and there is no such directory in /Library folder.

I enter the Aperture Serial, use the software for one or two days. And - I dont know why - It turns the to asks for the serial again

My user account is ADMIN. And what I did two weeks ago was a Recovery from Time Machine from my old macbook pro to my new one. And all my Apps and files were automatically moved. MS Office asked to serial too but I did enter one time and It worked perfectly.

I am considering re-installing the software againd... but afraid of losing any of my ten thousand pics.

    Thand you.

I checked the /Application Support/ProApps and there is no file "ProAppsSystemID"

That is strong indication, that Aperture cannot write to the folder /Library/Application Support /ProApps

This does not look like a problem that reinstalling the software will solve, you need to fix the permissions on the System library, I think.

Give yourself Read+Write access to the /Library/Application Support/ProApps folder, if you do not have it.

    • Quit Aperture.
    • Go to your MacintoshHD and open the folder "Library", then "Application Support"
    • Select the Folder "ProApps" and open the "Get Info" panel (from the Finder > File > Get Info, or press the key combination ⌘I.

    ProApps.png

    • In the Info-panel that opens disclose the "Sharing & Permissions" brick. Check the permissions for "admin". These should be "Read & Write". If thea are not, click the padlock icon and change the permissions to "Read& Write". Launch Aperture and enter the Serial Number.

Check, if the ProAppSystemID is now written to the ProApps folder.

Sometimes Aperture writes the ProAppsSystemID file to a temporary directory, when it cannot write to the Library.

    Use the Finder's "Go" menu

Go > Got to folder    and  enter /tmp into the textfield. If you see the file there, move it to its proper location.

    Hi Leonie. The problem endures.

    My account is adminstrator.

I checked the permissions. Everything's OK.

But I couldn't find the ProAppsSystemID file.

Apperture is working since I do not reboot my macbook. If I restart it, Apperture ask again for serial number.

You cannot find the /tmp folder in the search window. You have to go there directliy. Use the Finder's "GO" menu (Ir > Ir para a pasta) and enter "/tmp". This will open a window in the temporary directory.

The ProAppSystemID may not appear immediately, perhaps you first have to quit Aperture. Usually the file will be written when saving and exiting.
