I'm having a similar issue, though for me it doesn't matter if wifi is on or not. It's happened to me while at home on wifi and while out and about in a grocery store parking lot without wifi. I haven't noticed if it varies with 4G or LTE but I know the wifi doesn't affect mine.

I'm on Verizon and absolutely frustrated but I really am starting to think this is an iOS issue, since they've replaced my phone already and it's still doing it.

Would anyone from Apple care to chime in on this?

  • strangestlestrange Level 1 Level 1 (10 points)

Yeah I would love to hear what Apple would have to say about it but...somehow, I don't think we'll hear anything.

This is a user-to-user forum. Apple does not participate here. If you need to contact Apple Technical Support, there is information on how to do so at the Contact Us link at the bottom right of every page.

My wife and I are both experiencing the same problem on occasion. We're on AT&T. It kind of defeats the purpose of providing your cell phone number to people who need to be able to reach you even though it's intermittent. It's a major problem that Apple and the wireless providers need to address sooner rather than later.

I've had this issue since I received my first 5 (a month ago), I had it replaced because of the issue. I've restored, cleared networking and started over from scratch as a new phone. The only thing I've found that helps me is rebooting it a couple of times a day. I reboot first thing in the AM and then sometime around 2-3 in the afternoon. On days that I forget to reboot I get a text or two that says, "hey when you get back in range call me." or something similar. I reboot and am back in business for a few hours. I think I'll set a repeating calendar event to remind myself to reboot. *****, but works.

    Opsin,

It's crazy just how many people are having this issue and nothing is being done about it! My replacement is still missing calls from time to time.

Thank you for posting about what helps you! I'm going to try doing this. Setting a reminder is a good idea, but it's just such a shame that we have to do this just to have a working iPhone. I really wish Apple would look into this problem.

It happened again to me today. My wife tried to call me to help her get ice off the car windshield. She called three times and I never got a missed call. Absolutely infuriating. Having to reset the phone is ludicrous. It's not a solution, it's a compromise.

Same issue here, I wish I'd never bought this phone.

I have discoverd something seems to have aleiviated the issue for me. My ISP is Comcast xfinity and I use a cable Motorola gateway (don't get me started). I originally had set it up on a splitter right at the cable receiver. I was digging into why I was having intermittent internet signal issues and noticed that the time stamps on the TC3 and TC4 messages (google them) in the event log matched up with the issues I have been having with my phone. I moved the gateway to another jack in my apartment and cleared the event log.

That was three weeks ago. I have had no Internet signal issues since then and the issue with my phone seems to have gone away as well. It feel like AT&T is using wifi to talk to devices and if there is a lot of traffic or signal issues with the wifi, nothing gets through.

I do the same as opsin, it'a pain cause I forget all the time.

And i'm usually on whatsApp or something so I don't really notice that there is something wrong until I get called up on my other phone. Yes, I have 2 iPhone 5, one is private (the trouble one) and one is my work phone.

So there isn't any fix to this?

Like a permanent one, kinda a pain to reboot it all the time... or several times a day.

I just find its strange that the 3G works fine, but the phone calls and regular sms don't work.

Hope Apple can solve this, or do they even know that this is a real problem??

I think it is a sim card problem. I had mine replaced and it seems not to have this problem again. Contact your provider.

I'm skeptical that it would be a SIM card issue because both Verizon and AT&T users have reported problems. My phone continues to not register many calls and messages. I have been a long-time iPhone user, but am beginning to become disillusioned. I am extremely troubled by Apple's lack of ownership of this issue. Apple needs to acknowledge the problem and provide a fix.

Both Verizon and ATT iPhone 5s require SIM cards in order to function.

For me it wasn't a SIM card issue. I got my phone replaced by Apple and will keep you posted if I still run into this issue. Here's what I did:

    1. Went to ATT and explained the problem. They replaced my SIM card and told me to go to Apple if this persists.

    2. Still had this problem so I went to Apple (store) and they suggested I completely reset my phone and do NOT restore from backup. And to revisit them if this persists.

    3. Still had this problem so I went back to Apple and they replaced the phone for me.

Rumor is phone isn't provisioned with the correct settings on the carrier when registered. Registering a new phone should fix it. But take that with a grain of salt, it's just a rumor and I have yet to verify if replacing the phone resolves this.
