download the the photos to your desktop and then import into iPhoto.
You can also control click on the full size photo and scroll to "add image to iPhoto Library" Sometimes I do not get the option in the contextual menu to "add image to iPhoto Library". I don't know why sometimes I get it and other times I don't.

You wouldn't actually delete them from the iPod. The steps to take are to set up in iTunes preferences and iPod prefs (in iTunes) what you want to sync to the iPod. You choose what playlist/playlists/entire library you want to sync with. If you don't want to sync with any, then don't check any playlists.
The same for photos and albums.
Then when the iPod syncs it will update the iPod with only what you selected in the Preferences.
what you sync or don't sync on the iPod will not affect your iTunes or iPhoto Library.
